Location and Surroundings

The island state Singapore is a peculiar struggle between East and West. Standing in the city core it is easy to be misled into believing that the West has the upper hand. Skyscrapers reaching for the sky, office complexes and shopping centers compete for space and English is heard everywhere.

But going just a few blocks away from the centre one discovers both Indian and Chinese neighborhoods where time seems to have stood still for at least decades. Here you can find bargains in old colonial shops and eat simple but delicious meals in countless tiny eateries. Had it not been for all the tourists crowding the streets, it would be easy to think that this is a film set about Singapore when the place was nothing more than a distant outpost of the British Empire.

If you search for the most genuine and unaltered lifestyle this can be found along the north coast, facing Malaysia, in several picturesque fishing villages that have been deliberately preserved and where the only modernity is the possibility to rent a bike. Which incidentally is a great way to see Singapore - there is a network of both cycling and running tracks throughout the island, including the central parts where the original rain forest is preserved and which has a rich animal and bird life.
